Nithari killer Surinder Koli's death sentence commuted to life term by Allahabad HC

Allahabad, Jan 28 (ANI): The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday converted the death sentence of Surendra Koli to life imprisonment in the Nithari killings case. The decision taken was based on a PIL filed in the case, citing a delay in the hearing of his mercy petition. Koli's mercy plea had been pending for three years. He was convicted of the murder, rape and cannibalism of five children, while another 14 cases against him are still pending. Tamil newspaper receives terrorist threat, Condemning reactions flow

New Delhi, Jan 28 (ANI): Weeks after 14 people died in an attack at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris, a threat letter for a similar attack has been received in Tamil Nadu. Condemning reactions flowed on Wednesday after a Tamil daily, Dinamalar, received a letter: supposedly from terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda, reading "Yesterday Charlie Hebdo, tomorrow Dinamalar". The letter mentions "the base moment of the Al-Qaeda" as the sender. DMK leader TKS Elangovan said that this is against the freedom of press. Congress leader Manish Tewari condemned the threat saying that freedom of press should not be attacked.
