Pakistan executes two convicted militants after lifting moratorium on the death penalty

Rawalpindi, Dec 20 (ANI): Pakistan hanged two militants as it began executing those on death row in the wake of the moratorium on the death penalty being lifted following the Peshawar school attack where more than 130 children lost their lives. The hanged militants had no links to the Taliban's assault in the city of Peshawar on Tuesday, but their executions came at a time when a shocked Pakistani society is piling pressure on the government to do more to stem escalating violence. Pakistan lifted a moratorium on the death penalty after the attack and Mohammed Aqeel and Arshad Mehmood were the first prisoners reported hanged under the new arrangements. The announcement of their deaths came just hours after the UN human rights office appealed to Pakistan to refrain from resuming executions, saying this would not stop terrorism and might even feed a "cycle of revenge". Post Peshawar attack, MHA issues guidelines to schools over security; politicos react

New Delhi, Dec 20 (ANI): The Union Home Ministry has issued fresh guidelines to schools across the country over security measures, days after militants in Peshawar killed 132 innocent school children. The fresh Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for schools issued by the MHA has advisory such as concrete boundary walls with at least three to four gates and three telephone lines at the main gate. The SOP also says that telephone number of nearest police station and PCR van should be displayed prominently in schools. It also emphasized on giving importance to CCTV cameras and alarm system. Reactions flow as MEA strips Devyani Khobragade of diplomatic charge

New Delhi, Dec 20 (ANI): Reactions flowed on Saturday after MEA stripped Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade of her duties as Director in the Development Partnership Division for making unauthorized statements in the media. Congress leader Manish Tewari accused the BJP government of double speak and not taking a decision in favour of Devyani as they supported her as Opposition during previous government. JD (U) leader Ali Anwar said that MEA should understand what problems Khobragade had to face in USA. Meanwhile, Security Expert Rajiv Dogra said that Devyani issue can be viewed from various angles, one of them being that USA government did not behave well with her. Khobragade has been placed under a ‘compulsory wait’. The vigilance case against her is underway on charges that she had failed to disclose that her husband is a US citizen and that she has got US passports for her two children. Dec 20, 2014

Indian nurses stranded in Libya return home

Kochi, Dec 20 (ANI): A first batch of 12 nurses that was stranded in war torn Libya have returned to Kochi. The nurses, who had shared their ordeal through a video appealing for help, have been evacuated by the Indian government. The 12 nurses arrived at the international airport around 2.30 a.m on Friday. The nurses had pleaded for help to return back to India at the earliest as they have not got their salaries for the past four months. A nurse, Jisha, narrated her ordeal upon arriving back from Libya. Earlier, the nurses stranded at Benghazi in Libya were shifted to a safe hospital but there they found it difficult to even have basic food as they had no money in the strife-torn country. Police destroy huge cache of seized liquor in Vadodara

Vadodara, Dec 20 (ANI): Police in Gujarat destroyed more than 100,000 seized liquor bottles as sale and consumption of liquor is banned in the state. Gujarat, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, has a sumptuary law in force that proscribes the manufacture, storage, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. The destruction took place in Vadodara city. Huge road rollers and bull dozers were seen moving over the seized liquor bottles. As winter sets in, Kashmir gorges on winter snacks

Srinagar, Dec 20 (ANI): Its winter season once again in northern India and as temperatures dip to sub-zero level in Kashmir, people throng markets in the valley to relish some of their favourite winter snacks. The traditional snacks of Jammu and Kashmir known as Nadir Mounji or Mounji Goul are selling like hot cakes in the winter season. These traditional snacks have different varieties including Nadir Monji, Gaer Gouji. Made from lotus stem, chestnuts and other ingredients, these snacks have a great demand this season. These snacks are an essential part of daily lives of people in Kashmir during winters. A seller, Mohammad Azad, said on Friday that people come from far flung areas to get a taste of their favourite snacks. New Delhi, Dec 20 (ANI): In yet another trouble for Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, the External Affairs Ministry has stripped her of her duties as Director in the Development Partnership Division of the MEA for making unauthorized statements in the media. She has been placed under a 'compulsory wait'. MEA Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that the action taken against Khobragade is related to an ongoing inquiry against her in a vigilance case. The vigilance case against Khobragade is underway on charges that she had failed to disclose that her husband is a US citizen and that she has got US passports for her two children. The government action means Khobragade remains in service but has no job for now. She could also face further administrative action. Dec 20, 2014

Final phase polling begins in Jharkhand

Jharkhand, Dec 20 (ANI): The fifth and final phase of voting for 16 Assembly seats spread across six districts has begun in Jharkhand amid high security. Among the heavyweights, Hemant Soren, the JMM leader, is contesting from Dumka, apart from Barhait constituency, where he is facing challenge from former Morcha leader and BJP candidate Hemlal Murmu. Sixteen of the 81 assembly constituencies will vote in this phase. Students express their angst against Peshawar massacre through painting

Moradabad, Dec 19 (ANI): Students in Moradabad took to paintings to express their anger to a terror attack on Pakistan's Peshawar city early this week, in which 132 children were killed. The paintings depict terror, death and blood and sketches are mainly in black and red. The Taliban, waging war against Pakistan in order to topple the government and set up an Islamic state, immediately claimed responsibility. After the attack, the Taliban declared that all of those children deserved to die because they were part of the military establishment. So far the Taliban have targeted mainly security forces, military bases and airports, but attacks on civilian targets with no logistical significance are relatively rare. Dec 19, 2014

Visiting Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid meets Modi

New Delhi, Dec 19 (ANI): Bangladesh President, Abdul Hamid, met Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on Friday. Hamid is on a six-day visit to India to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. He is visiting India on an invitation by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who visited Bangladesh in March 2013. President Hamid is scheduled to meet Indian leadership including Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari. Earlier in the day he also met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.Hamid's visit to India is the first by a ceremonial head of state of Bangladesh since 1972. BJP leader Nalin Kohli said that the Rajasthan government took the right step. National Commission for SC Chairman PL Punia welcomed the suspension of MP. However, Congress leader Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said that BJP had to suspend the MLA because of public pressure and that the BJP leaders have always used abusive language.
