Raman Singh assures safety against Maoist threats during upcoming state polls

Chhattisgarh, Nov 1 (ANI): Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh on Friday assured of safety and strict policing against Maoist threats during upcoming polls in the province. Voting in Chhattisgarh will be held in two phases on November 11 and November 19. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has reportedly issued warnings for Bastar region, which is a Maoists stronghold. Earlier on October 19, Maoists had passed on threats to voters by pasting banners in the villages asking them to boycott the upcoming state assembly polls in the region. Reportedly, the Maoists had been going around the villages and distributing pamphlets among the villagers, directing them not to vote. Earlier on Saturday the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) latest strategic transport aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster, undertook its first sortie towards transporting of relief materials, including specialist army vehicles and ambulance from bases in central India to Bhubaneswar, ahead of the arrival of Cyclone Phailin which struck the east coast of the country. Kevadia,Nov 1 (ANI): Indian opposition leader Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the world's tallest statue on Thursday at a cost of almost $340 million in honor of one of the country's founding fathers, a project he is using to undermine his chief rivals, the Gandhi-Nehru political dynasty. The statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's deputy and his interior minister but often at odds with him, is to be built on a river island in Gujarat, the home state of both Patel and Modi. The statue, twice the size of the Statue of Liberty, is seen as a not-so-subtle bid by Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appropriate an independence-era hero associated with the ruling Congress party that has largely been run by the Nehru-Gandhi family.
