Bangladesh HC orders death sentence to 14 in arms smuggling case

Chittagong, Jan 31 (ANI): A Bangladeshi court sentenced 14 people to death, including an Islamist party leader, Indian militant, a former security agency chief and a former deputy government minister for involvement in the country's biggest ever arms smuggling case. Leader of United Liberation Front of Assam, Paresh Barua, was among those who were awarded death penalty. India, Fiji sign DTAA to avoid double taxation

New Delhi, Jan 31 (ANI): India and Fiji signed a pact to avoid double taxation and to facilitate mutual economic co-operation between the two countries. The Government of India signed the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with the Government Fiji that also provides for exchange of banking information for tax administration purpose. The pact was signed in New Delhi by India’s Finance Minister P Chidambaram and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on behalf of the Government of Fiji. Speaking on the occasion, Chidambaram said the need for DTAA between the two countries was required and negotiations were already completed in 2011. Jan 31, 2014

Pak seeks early solution to intra-Kashmir trade issue

Islamabad, Jan 31 (ANI): Pakistan said it wants early solution to the issue relating to suspension of intra-Kashmir trade, so that the trade on this sector could continue. Efforts by India and Pakistan to increase trade and ease tension in disputed Kashmir have suffered a blow with Indian police saying they had seized more than 100 kilograms (220 lb) of heroin concealed in a truck full of nuts coming from the Pakistan side. Pakistan halted cross-border trade and bus travel across the Himalayan region after the seizure, and after New Delhi summoned Pakistan's acting envoy in protest. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the issue was under discussion between the two countries and it would be resolved soon. Jan 31, 2014

Krishi Mela highlights the commendable work of farmers and agriculture department in Manipur

Manipur, Jan 31 (ANI): A four-day long state level Krishi Mela was recently organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency in collaboration with the State Agriculture Department at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal. Addressing the event, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam stressed on the need for the introduction of modern agriculture techniques. Around 37 stalls from concerned departments and progressive farmers showcased their products and achievements. Technical sessions for farmers were also conducted as part of the fair. In the last five to six years, the directorate of Agriculture along with the horticulture Department, Fisheries directorate, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry directorate has been trying to boost production in the state to meet the food demands. 10 killed in Assam firing, locals block Assam-Arunachal Pradesh highway in protest

Sonitpur, Jan 30 (ANI): Locals in Sonitpur district of Assam blocked the National Highway 52 connecting the state with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the killing of 10 people in an alleged land dispute. Ten people were killed and 12 others injured after a dispute over eviction from encroached land in the area turned ugly. The area has been a bone of contention between the two states for decades.
