India beefs up security ahead of Chinese President's visit

Ahmedabad /New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Security agencies cast a tight security net around Ahmedabad where on Wednesday Chinese President Xi Jinping will begin his three-day India visit aimed at allaying suspicions and boosting ties.The Gujarat government is leaving no stone unturned for grand welcome for Xi who arrives on the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also marking his 64th birthday.Security personnel were deployed across the city and security was especially tight on the roads leading up to the airport in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, security arrangements were also tightened in New Delhi to foil any protests or attempts at self immolations by the Tibetan activists, police said.

Politicos react on Yogi Adityanath s UP bypoll remarks

New Delhi, Sep 17 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Wednesday over BJP Leader Yogi Adityanath s remarks on BJP s defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls. Adityanath had said on Tuesday that BJP had to face defeat in UP assembly polls because he was not allowed to campaign in the state for the elections. CPI leader D Raja said that such a remark is ridiculous and the people of UP did not vote for BJP because of Adityanath s hate speeches. CPI leader Atul Anjan said that Adityanath was constantly campaigning in UP and doing communal talks everywhere. RJD leader Manojh Jha said that the people of UP have taken the correct decision and if BJP will try to divide the people of our country, it will have to face more setbacks.

Bypoll Results: BJP to introspect and prepare for forthcoming polls

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): After achieving less than the desired results in bypolls held across 9 states, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sambit Patra said on Wednesday that the party will introspect on the results and will address the problems at the ground level. After bagging just two out of 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh, state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said that the entire team will introspect and further plan strategy for the forthcoming polls.

Want to contest on more seats due to better LS poll performance: NCP

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on Wednesday said that the NCP wants to contest from more number of seats in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls because his party performed better than the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections. The polling for 288 seat Maharashtra state assembly are scheduled to be held on October 15, with the counting of the votes set to take place on October 19.During last assembly elections in Maharashtra in 2009, the NCP and the Congress Party had won 82 and 62 seats respectively, and formed the government.

Salman Khurshid's NGO could face CBI probe

New Delhi, Sep 17 (ANI): Social Justice and Empowerment Minister said on Wednesday that his department had received complaints against some NGO's on which investigations were carried out and two NGO's were taken into consideration, of which one is being handled by former Union Minister Salman Khurshid and his wife. He further said that during the investigation many documents of the NGO were found fake. The ministry has asked the law department to give opinion for the CBI inquiry on the two NGO's and is now waiting for the reply.

New Delhi, Sep 17 (ANI): Political leaders on Tuesday reacted over Chinese President Xi Jinping s visit to India. Xi Jinping will arrive in Ahmedabad on Wednesday afternoon on a three day state visit. He will be received by Gujarat Governor OP Kohli, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and her cabinet colleagues at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport at around 2 p.m. President Jinping, his wife and his entourage will be given a traditional welcome along with a guard of honour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome him in Vastrapur, after which, both leaders will hold talks. It is expected that both sides will sign three memoranda of understanding (MoUs). Of them, two are for relations between Guangdong and Gujarat and Guangzhou and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The third MoU is related to cooperation in the industrial sector.

BJP presses Mamata to ensure safety of women in West Bengal

New Delhi, Sep 17 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader on Wednesday exhorted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure women's safety in the state. Jadavpur University students have sought the resignation of the Vice Chancellor after 35 students were arrested by the police while protesting outside the university campus to demand a fresh probe in the molestation case that took place on August 28. Last month during a festival organized by the college as many as ten male students had allegedly dragged a female student of the University into the boys' hostel and molested her. The alleged victim informed the college authorities and filed a police complaint, following which the officials have begun the investigations.

Woman molestation case: 35 Jadavpur University students arrested for protesting

Kolkata, Sep 17 (ANI): About 35 students who were protesting outside the Jadavpur university campus against the molestation of a woman student were arrested by the police on Wednesday. The students were gheraoing the vice chancellor and registrar demanding a fresh probe into the case where a woman student was allegedly dragged into a men's hostel and sexually molested. The students' union demanded a fresh probe panel and insisted that the gherao would not be lifted until some assurance was given in the matter. It is being widely reported that the students were lathicharged by the police and dragged. Moreover, women students who were part of the protest have also filed a molestation complaint against the police.

PM Modi seeks mother's blessings on his 64th birthday

Gandhinagar, Sep 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his mother's blessings on his 64th birthday, his first after assuming office amid greetings pouring in from across the nation on Wednesday. On the occasion of his birthday, Modi began his day by visiting his home state Gujarat. Donning saffron kurta, Modi arrived home, 23 km from Ahmedabad, alone in a normal vehicle without any security to meet his mother Heeraben on his first birthday after assuming office as Prime Minister. He touched his mother's feet and conversed with her. Heeraben fed him with sweets and blessed him. She also presented him with a gift as a gesture. Poor remain worst affected in flood-hit Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 17 (ANI): The worst flooding in Jammu and Kashmir in over a century has left poor and migrant workers the worst hit as they are stranded with no shelter or food. More than 75,000 people were still in partly submerged homes in Srinagar, Kashmir's capital city of more than a million people, where roads have been transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. Many complain that the government, which has maintained a heavy presence in the territory to keep a lid on the revolt, has left them to their fate. Residents stranded for days by the floodwaters said that the army has selectively evacuated tourists and people according to a pre-set priority list, leaving locals to be rescued later by volunteers. Migrant workers and poor people say they are all still struggling for basic amenities like safe drinking water, food packets and blankets. Meanwhile, a migrant worker from northwestern province of Rajasthan who makes brooms to earn a living, Jitesh, said the floods have literally left them with nothing.
