SC issues notice to centre on Uttarakhand governor's plea

Haridwar, Aug 21 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Thursday referred a case regarding the removal of Uttarakhand governor Aziz Qureshi to a five-judge bench after Qureshi approached the Court challenging the Narendra Modi-led government's move to make him quit the post.The court response came after senior consul Kapil Sibal said that a governor can only be removed by the president and the home secretary could not just pick up the phone and ask him to resign. He said there has to be a procedure to secure the resignation of a governor. Aug 21, 2014

Sanjiv Chaturvedi not eligible for AIIMS CVO post: Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, Aug 21 (ANI): Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday that Indian Forest Service officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi is not eligible for the post of Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service officer of the Haryana cadre, was removed from the post of Chief Vigilance Officer ( CVO) of AIIMS. This was done even though his appointment order had been for a fixed tenure of four years, ending in June 2016. Nine people killed in Assam-Nagaland border violence

Guwahati, Aug 21 (ANI): Police said on Thursday (August 21) that nine people have been killed due to violence in border areas of Assam and Nagaland. Director General of Police of Assam's capital, Guwahati, said that several reasons were responsible for ignition of the issue, including armed tribals. Meanwhile, Mos for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, met chief ministers of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, and Nagaland, TR Zeliand, on Thursday to find solution to the flaring chaos. The situation turned tense after 22 people were injured in clashes between the police and protesters in Gologhat district of Assam on Wednesday (August 20). GITANJALI and UNIONBANK were among the top gainers of Group A with an increase of 8.94% and 8.14% along with INDIAN BANK and TITAN with an increase of 7.17% and 5.70% respectively, while the top losers of Group A include BHUSHAN STEEL LTD. and AMARAJABAT with a decrease of 4.97% and 4.38% along with PIPAVAV DEFENCE AND OFFSHORE ENG LTD. and JPINFRATEC with a decrease of 4.37% and 3.91% at the close of the markets. Incidents of rape cost billions to tourism industry, says Finance Minister

New Delhi, Aug 21 (ANI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley took on rapes terming country_s tourist sector as _underachieved_ and said such incidents have cost billions of dollars to the tourism industry. While addressing a conference of state tourism ministers in New Delhi on Thursday Jaitley said that due to several reasons, including rapes and law and order situation, the tourism sector is not blooming as much as it should. Jaitley focused on the massive potential India has in tourism and said due to presence of mountains, rivers, forests, beaches, historical monuments, and metro cities in the subcontinent, the country should be overcrowded with tourists. Islamabad, Aug 21 (ANI): Supporters of opposition leader Imran Khan and populist cleric Tahir ul-Qadri were hopeful and determined on Thursday, after their leaders opened negotiations with the Pakistani government, in an effort to end protests against the prime minister and overcome a political impasse. The announcement on Wednesday (August 20) came the day after Pakistan_s powerful military said the two sides should engage in dialogue and warned that key government institutions were under its protection. Former cricket star Khan and cleric Tahir ul-Qadri, who controls a network of Islamic schools and hospitals, have been leading protests in the capital Islamabad since August 15.
