Season 1 of Showtime's gothic drama "Penny Dreadful" ended on a tricky note for all the characters.

Vanessa learned of the demon inside her and was unsure if she wanted it gone; it was revealed that Ethan Chandler was a werewolf; and Dr Frankenstein killed Brona to create a bride for Creature. Not surprisingly, things are going to get messier when the series returns in April as Season 2 will see the hunters becoming the hunted.

A new trailer for Season 2 showed a number of disturbing scenes; one of which is that of Evelyn Poole relaxing in a bathtub filled with blood.

Evelyn is going to be the main antagonist in the season and there is going to be a lot of focus on witchcraft, show creator John Logan said at the winter TV press tour. Fans of "Penny Dreadful" will know Evelyn as Madame Kali, a spiritualist who hosted a séance in the first season.

According to TVGuide, Logan - while elaborating on his new antagonist - said: "I don't believe in villains and heroes. You think Evelyn is a villain, but she's more of an antagonist. She has a noble calling even though it runs counter to Sir Malcolm's. She might think she's on the side of the angels, even though she's on the side of the devils."

The creator said that Evelyn will be the cause of tension between Sir Malcolm Vanessa, and this will eventually alienate him from the group.

Meanwhile, Vanessa and Ethan will get closer as each struggles to battle the demons within them. In the first season, it was revealed Ethan was a werewolf and as Season 2 moves forward, fans will get to see a lot more of that, said Logan.

"You'll definitely see more this season. He learns what he is. How we treat lycanthropy is a big part of the season," the creator said.

Season 2 of Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" will premiere on Sunday, 26 April. It stars Eva Green as Vanessa, Helen McCrory as Evelyn Poole, Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray and Harry Treadaway as Victor Frankenstein.
