For the past two years the Academy Awards ceremony was criticised for the lack of black actors nominated for an Oscar. It is unclear if #OscarsSoWhite had an effect on the selection of the nominees but this year a record six black actors were nominated for an 2017 award: Denzel Washington, Ruth Negga, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.
