The cat is finally out of the bag. Popular Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus announced at the 'Next Big Step' event that the company will soon start phone production in India to satiate the burgeoning local demand.

The company has already set up an R&D facility in Bengaluru, India. OnePlus has joined hands with Foxconn to locally manufacture devices at the latter's Rising Stars factory, Sri City IBC (Integrated Business City), Andhra Pradesh.

If things go as planned, OnePlus' first made-in-India device will roll out of Foxconn's unit by December-end. Currently, the factory has a cumulative capacity of churning out 500,000 units per month and based on the demand, it can be scaled up, said the company in a press statement.

"Today is a big day for us. Producing smartphones in India is one of the important decisions that we have made so far at OnePlus, and we are thankful to the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Foxconn for helping us make this happen. India being one of our biggest markets worldwide, we are committed to a long term sustainable growth path. This move will strengthen our presence and help us step up momentum in India," said Pete Lau, founder (& CEO), OnePlus.

In a related development, OnePlus on Monday (12 October) announced that the company in association with e-commerce partner Amazon will host a second round of OnePlus 2 open sale on 13 October morning 8:00 am IST.
