Nigel Farage has become the first British politician to meet Donald Trump since he became US president-elect, with an aide of the latter saying that the meeting had been incredibly productive.

Trumps spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway told the Guardian newspaper that the president-elect had hosted Farage at his private residence in Trump Tower in New York on 12 November.

Farage, one of the chief architects of Brexit, was invited to attend a Trump rally in Mississippi in August, when the then presidential candidate drew parallels between his own campaign and the UKs exit from the European Union.

I think they enjoy each others company, Conway told the Guardian.

Farage tweeted that it was a great honour to meet Trump in New York and revealed that the real estate mogul had been open to the idea of placing Winston Churchills bust back in the Oval Office.

It was a great honour to spend time with [Trump]. He was relaxed and full of good ideas. Im confident he will be a good president, he wrote.

[Trumps] support for the US-UK relationship is very strong. This is a man with whom we can do business.

Especially pleased at [Trumps] very positive reaction to the idea that Sir Winston Churchills bust should be put back in the Oval Office.

Earlier, Farage told Fox News that he was looking forward to stronger US-UK ties under President Trump.

Trump is an anglophile. He understands and recognises what our two great nations have done together, between us, and thank goodness were coming to the end of an American president who loathed us, the UKIP leader said.

One of the things we can do between us is a sensible trade relationship, cut tariffs. Were massive investors in each others countries. Theres a brighter future.

When asked about Brexit, Farage said it had provided ordinary people with a chance to voice how they felt.

Brexit was the first real kick back against the liberal establishment, which has dominated with its friends in big business and the big banks, dominated the world for the last couple of decades, he stated.
