New high resolution images of Pluto released on September 24 reveal a snakeskin-like texture on the planets surface.

The images were captured by the New Horizons spacecraft on 14 July. A mountain range known as Tartarus Dorsa on Plutos surface appears grey and blue, its jagged ridgeline created what scientists have described as a snakeskin-like appearance.

Another high resolution image showed colours ranging from brown to white and shades in between.

New Horizons is the first spacecraft to visit the dwarf planet.
