National Donut Day is observed in the US every year on the first Friday of June to honour the services of many people who served the fried dough confectionery to the soldiers of World War I.

The practice of celebrating the day began on 7 June, 1938, by international charitable organisation Salvation Army.

Interestingly, there are three other donut holidays in the country, the International Jelly-Filled Donut Day on 8 June, National Cream-Filled Donut Day on 14 September and Buy a Donut Day on 30 October.

To mark the special day, many stores in the US give away free donuts to its customers.
