Mumbai on Wednesday experienced the second coldest day since 1949 as the minimum temperature fell six degrees below normal, said reports.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a temperature of 11.6 degrees Celsius at Santacruz. The lowest temperature of the decade was recorded at 11.4 Â°C in 2011.

"The drop in temperature is caused by northerly winds which are cold. This is causing areas like Mumbai to see a drop in temperature. This trend is likely to continue for another two to three days," NDTV quoted the Regional Meteorological Centre head VK Rajeev as saying.

Though the temperature is normally recorded around 17 °C in Mumbai during December, it dipped to 11.6 °C at Santacruz on Wednesday, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

Last year, the minimum temperature had dipped to the lowest of 12 °C on 15 December.

The all-time lowest temperature recorded in Mumbai is at 10.6 °C on 20 December 1949.
