Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed will be buried at the Dara Shikoh Park in his hometown Bijbehara in South Kashmir's Anantnag district.

He is likely to be buried on Thursday evening, IANS cited its sources from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as saying.

Sayeed died of multiple organ failure at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on Thursday morning, 14 days after he was admitted following a chest infection. His body has been flown to Srinagar where his relatives and senior political leaders received his mortal remains.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir Omar Abdullah paid their last respects at the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium. His body will be taken to Bijbehara where he will be buried.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is at Sayeed's official residence in Srinagar, will also attend the funeral at Bijbehara. "Going to Srinagar to participate in the last rites of late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed sahab, (sic)" he tweeted.

The Jammu & Kashmir government declared holiday on Thursday following Sayeed's demise, and a seven-day mourning period will be observed in the state to pay respect to the veteran politican.

The flags atop state government buildings will fly at half-mast during the seven-day mourning period, an official spokesperson was quoted as saying by PTI.

Earlier, Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi, Singh and other senior leaders paid floral tributes to Sayeed at Palam airport. Modi expressed his condolensces on his demise in a series of tweets.

"Mufti Sahab's demise leaves a huge void in the nation and in J&K, where his exemplary leadership had a major impact on people's lives. RIP, (sic)" he said in a tweet.

"What stood out about Mufti Sahab was his statesmanship. In his long political journey he won many admirers across the political spectrum. Mufti Sahab provided a healing touch to J&K through his leadership. He will be missed by all of us. Condolences to his family and supporters, (sic)" he said in another tweets.

Sayeed was heading the PDP and was the chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir in the first PDP-BJP coalition government. Now his reins will likely be handed over to his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.
