More than 30,000 Indians overstayed in the United States last year, a new report has stated. The report also said that a total of 1.4 million people from India travelled to America in 2016 on various visas.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday submitted an an official report on departures and overstays to the Congress on foreign visitors who entered the US on various visas as non-immigrant visitors. The foreign visitors in the report included businessmen, tourists, students, and visitors exchange.

The report, which covered about 96 percent of the total non-immigrant visitors, stated that more than 50 million non-immigrants were expected to leave the US in 2016. However, out of these, around 739,478 overstayed their admission, resulting in a total overstay rate of 1.47 per cent, according to PTI.

The DHS report said that out of more than 739,000 overstays, at least 628,799 were suspected "in-country" overstays, which means that there is no record of these visitors leaving America. The rest of the foreign visitors reportedly left the country after the expiry of their lawful admission periods, which is called out-of-country overstay.
