It's been a while since Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo fans heard anything about the renewal of Lee Joon-gi and Lee Ji-eun a.k.a IU-starrer period drama. Many of them are wondering if SBS will announce the release date for season 2 considering the increase in demand for the next instalment.

Several online petitions have been filed by admirers of the onscreen couple, Prince Wang So a.k.a King Gwangjong and his mistress Hae Soo, urging the broadcasting network to renew the show for second season. One of the petitions posted on change.org has been signed by over 52,000 people.

However, speculations surrounding the new instalment of the South Korean mini-series point out at the high television ratings of its preceding drama, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, as the reason for the show not getting a green light.

Meanwhile, rumour also has it that the SBS period drama may return with a new set of cast members in its second season. But fans have already revealed that they would like to see the original cast in the new instalment.

So what could be the fate of Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo and its lead cast members?
Regardless of repeated requests from fans through online petitions and various social networking sites, the broadcasting network is yet to make an official announcement about the renewal of the show. People have not heard anything about the production assignments and the official filming dates.

Also, Lee Joon-gi, Lee Ji-eun and the rest of the cast members are yet to renew their contract with the Seoul-based television network for the second season of the South Korean mini-series. Since the male protagonist is currently busy with his upcoming web drama, First Seven Kisses, it remains to be seen if he will have time to portray Wang So again. 

So it might take a while to find out if SBS will renew Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo for season 2 with its original cast members.
