As daylight hit, migrants travelling across Serbia continued to pour into the Hungarian border area on 26 August. Some braved the new barbed wire fence along the border in order to avoid police checks.

Hungarian authorities have been rolling out a low, barbed-wire barrier along the border with Serbia, while construction crews raced to complete a more substantial 3.5-metre-high fence.

Critics point out that the vast majority of migrants who enter Hungary do not linger, determined to reach countries like Austria, Germany and Sweden where they link up with relatives and friends in search of work and security.

More than 100,000 migrants, many of them refugees from conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, have entered Hungary, part of Europes Schengen zone of passport-free travel, this year en route to the more affluent countries of western and northern Europe.

The influx peaked on 24 August reaching its highest daily rate of 2,093, as many race to beat a fence Hungary is building on its 110-mile border with Serbia to keep them out.
