MCD Polls

The BJP, which has had control over the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for multiple terms now, looks all set to return to power this year. The voter turnout at the polls this year was quite low at 53.58 percent. The exit polls, however, have predicted that the BJP will get more than 200 of the 272 seats in the MCD.

The elections are important for both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP. For the AAP, the MCD elections will act as a report card pointing out whether the party has taken the correct steps while in power in the Delhi Assembly, and if it needs to do more in order to retain power in the national capital.

AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has, since the day of polling, alleged that the EVMs used during the polls were tampered with and that several AAP voters did not find their names on the voter list when they went to exercise their franchise on Sunday, April 23. He may raise these allegations yet again if it becomes apparent that the BJP is winning the MCD elections.

The Congress has mostly put up a brave face but possibly has a zero chance of winning the polls this year with several senior leaders like SM Krishna among others having quit the party.
