The appearance of a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Xrest at the Auto Expo earlier this year in Delhi had hinted that the country's largest car maker is looking to give a crossover like touch to its popular tall-boy design hatchback Wagon R.

Now it looks like the car is just around the corner as the first spy shots of what appears to be the soft crossover of Wagon R have hit the web.

Though at this point of time, it is unclear if the test mule spotted was a new Wagon R crossover, the spy shots hint that Maruti engineers are developing a new model out of Wagon R.

The latest spy shots come from GaadiWaadi and the test mule is seen with plastic mouldings throughout the lower part of its body, which is primarily a feature of crossovers. There are also silver skid guards on the sides along with smoked tail lamps.

Speaking of the cabin, the test mule features stylish dual-tone beige and black interior. Judging from the spy shots, it looks like the new Wagon R avatar is in its production stage in the country and the company is likely to present the car to its fans in 2015.

As for the engines, it is expected that the new crossover like Wagon R will also features the same 1.0L K-Series petrol engine, which can churn out a power of 68PS and 90Nm torque, coupled to a five- speed manual transmission.

A recent report also indicated that Maruti is working on a new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) Wagon R stingray for the Indian market.
