It looks like the petrol avatar of Maruti Suzuki's compact SUV Vitara Brezza is coming to the market sooner than expected. If the emerging reports are anything to go by, the Vitara Brezza petrol will see the light of the day in India by April 2017.

The Vitara Brezza, the compact SUV from the country's largest carmaker launched in March this year, is currently being sold only with the diesel engine. The compact SUV has been earning tremendous response in the country and has bagged over 1.72 lakh bookings. However, Maruti is not keen to rest on its laurels.

The work on the petrol-powered Vitara Brezza is progressing rapidly and in its new avatar, the SUV is likely to get 1.5-litre petrol mill under the hood, which would churn around 100bhp of power mated to five-speed manual transmission or automatic gearbox. There have also been reports that Maruti is considering 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine to power the Vitara Brezza. The petrol-powered Vitara Brezza would be priced lower than the current model in the market. Currently, the Vitara Brezza is powered by a 200 DDis 1248cc diesel engine that is tuned to pump in 88.5bhp at 4,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1,750rpm mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It boasts of best-in-class fuel efficiency of 24.3 kmpl.

Available in LDi, LDi (O), VDi, VDi (O), ZDi, ZDi+ and ZDi+ dual tone trims with six colour options, the Vitara Brezza houses features like electrically foldable ORVMs with integrated turn indicators, a reverse parking camera, smartplay infotainment system, cooled glove box, cruise control, projector headlamps and inbuilt navigation. On the safety front, the Vitara Brezza packs driver airbag, front passenger airbag and ABS with EBD.
