Martyr’s Day

The country held services across the country, in memory of freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for a free and independent India. The Government of India led by example, honoring martyrs at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, on Monday.

The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, acclaimed as the Father of the Nation, on Jan. 30, 1948, led to this day being declared Martys' Day.

The President of India, Pratibha Patil, along with the Vice-President, Hamid Ansari and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and other dignitaries, gathered at the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, to pay their respects. A two minute prayer, encompassing all religions, was conducted at the event.
