As Manchester United continue to be linked with some of the biggest names in the game, there are also going to be a few exits to make way for the incoming players as well, and one of them looks like being Ander Herrera.

Louis Van Gaal has not quite been able to fit Herrera with any great regularity into his system, with Marouane Fellaini, courtesy some impressive performances, usurping the Spaniard as a midfield partner to Daley Blind, and the manager is now ready to let the 25-year-old leave in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Express, who cite reports in Italy.

Herrera has not played in any game since being substituted at halftime, for Fellaini, against West Brom, with the midfielder an unused sub in the subsequent English Premier League matches against Chelsea, Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

With Manchester United manager Van Gaal looking at bringing in a midfielder during the January transfer window – Arturo Vidal, Kevin Strootman, Ilkay Gundogan and Sami Khedira are just some of them being linked – Herrera's chances of making a name for himself at Old Trafford could be further diminished.

With Michael Carrick returning return from injury, he is another option available for Van Gaal in the central midfield position, leaving Herrera out in the cold again.

Herrera only joined Manchester United this summer for a fee nearing £30 million, and it is difficult to imagine him leaving after just six months. The chances are he will at least battle it out until the end of the season and probably take stock from there.

If Van Gaal does make a major signing in the midfield department, however, questions will be inevitably raised over Herrera's future.

But the manner in which Manchester United players have fallen down with injury this season – albeit primarily in defence – there is a decent chance that Herrera, who himself has been an injury victim this campaign, could get his opportunity to impress by getting a solid run in the team, much like he did in the early part of the season.
