2K has unveiled its upcoming crime-action video game, Mafia 3. The new trailer was unveiled at the ongoing Gamescom 2015 at Cologne, Germany.

The nearly four minute-long trailer introduces a new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, who is returning home after his stint in Vietnam, following the Vietnam War.

Clay, an orphan, returns to his surrogate father and brother only to be attacked by the dreaded and popular Italian mob. He is also left out to die after being shot at, but he survives. The next logical step for him is to avenge the crimes committed against him by the Italians.

He finds himself a new family, whih comprises other similar-minded criminals, and begins indulging in organised crime.

The video lays emphasis on the "code" where loyalty and family are an integral part of the Italian crime syndicates.

This new anti-hero, who is of half-black and half-white descent, goes well with the 1968's New Orleans, where the story is set. IGN reports that as he builds his criminal empire, Clay will get some gang leaders as his lieutenants, namely Cassandra and her Haitians, Burke and his Irish and Vito Scaletta, the protagonist from Mafia 2.

Players will be granted special abilities and unlocks by these lieutenants, depending upon the "favour" granted to them, but they will betray you if they feel "you're giving away their piece of this new crime pie".

The video raises the pitch with some of the classic 60s' rock music ("Paint it Black", "Along the Watchtower", and "Fortunate Son"), muscle cars and some old school mafia tricks like duct taping your opponent and making him realise his mistakes only to be dropped into infamous swamps of New Orleans that are infested by alligators.

Players will be playing as third person and will have to work their way up the food chain and also rule the city. The game will have an open-world setting.

With Clay as the new protagonist in the game, players will have to attack the hideouts of rivals, snatch away properties belonging to others and also interact with Mafia 2 characters. They will also be able to take part in unarmed combat and be given a variety of weapons to choose from.

Players will have the freedom of choice regarding what they want to do with the lives of gang members who are caught. They can be killed after extracting information from them or they can set them free.

"In Mafia 3, we are introducing players to an unexpected new anti-hero and an iconic city to explore, all within a hard-boiled drama set during one of the most turbulent years in American history," said Haden Blackman, studio head and creative director at developer Hanger 13, according to a press release. 2K might release more information about the game soon.

Mafia 3 will be released in 2016 to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
