Kurdish fighters said on July 11, that Luke Rutter, a British citizen who volunteered to fight with the YPG, had been killed fighting against Islamic State forces near Raqqa. The YPG say that Rutter, who was 22 and from Birkenhead, travelled to join the Kurdish forces in March and had taken the name Soro Zinar.
