The hashtag #മലയാളീസ് (Malayalis) has been trending on Twitter since Tuesday, 7 April for no specific reason.
A user named SRS along with his friends began using #മലയാളീസ് in an attempt to make it the most trending keyword on Twitter.
ട്രെന്ഡിക്കാമെന്നുള്ള അഹങ്കാരം ഒന്നുമില്ല.. എന്നാലും ഒരു ശ്രമം.. #മലയാളീസ് സ്പോൺസേർഡ് ബൈ മീ @vikramanmuthu @TheKeeleri തുടങ്ങിക്കോ :)
Following this, Keralites all over the globe chipped in to make it the most trending word on the micro-blogging site since early Tuesday morning.
Earlier, after team India won the opening match of the World Cup 2015 on 15 February, all social media platforms in India were flooded with congratulatory messages for the team who defeated arch rival Pakistan with the hashtag #जयहिन्द (#JaiHind).
While #जयहिन्द was the first Hindi hashtag that went viral on the micro-bloging site on 16 February, #മലയാളീസ് has become the first Malayalam trending keyword on Twitter.
With the popularity of social media, Malayalis are known all over the world for expressing their opinions on all the matters that bother them.
From abusing Russian Tennis star Maria Sharapova for not knowing Cricket God Sachin Tendulkar to taking down South Indian actor Premgi Amaren for making fun of Malayalis after the liquor ban in the state, there have been many occasions when social media platforms have been flooded with messages in the south Indian language.
Now, Keralites have taken over Twitter too.
