The District Collector of Ernakulam, MG Rajamanickam, has requested people to financially support the family of the 29-year-old Dalit student who was brutally murdered on April 28 in Kerala. The incident has shocked the entire nation, with many questioning the delay in finding the culprit, even a week after the heinous crime was committed.

Rajamanickam, who was with the family of the deceased for the past three days, wrote on his social media account: "For the purpose of those who promised to the poor lady of great things, pls contribute in the following joint account in the name of District collector & Rajeshwari [sic]."

After the incident hit the headlines, many high-profile people, including politicians and film stars, have been visiting the taluk hospital in Kuruppampady, near Perumbavoor, where the victim's mother Rajeshwari has been admitted after she collapsed hearing the shocking news of her daughter's murder. The Collector pointed out in a Facebook post on May 5 that many who visited the mother and sister of the victim, arrived at the hospital either with a photographer of videographer as part of a publicity stunt. "For the past three days, I was with the family and what I noticed was, one group of people who came to see the mother of the victim were with either a photographer or a video grapher for publicity, other group of people were talking, arguing, making hue and cry on social media. And some others were mere spectators. After 10 days this energy will go and the family will be left with nothing [sic]," Rajamanickam wrote on his personal and official Facebook accounts.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi are also expected to visit the family of the victim, who was beaten savagely using a sharp weapon that pulled out her intestines. Nearly 38 injuries were found on her body.

The investigative officers have detained two suspects and the police has released a sketch of a suspect, based on information gathered from neighbours who are said to have seen a man around the victim's house that day. Read more HERE.
