The South Indian state Karnataka was formed on 1 November, 1956, and the state celebrates its 59th formation day, known as Kannada Rajyotsava, on Sunday. 

Kannadigas all around the world celebrate the day, which is also listed among the government holidays in Karnataka.

On this special day, the Government of Karnataka announces and presents the Rajyotsava Awards and the Chief Minister and Governor address the official function during which the unofficial Karnataka flag is hoised.

The red and yellow flags is hoisted at different places by people belonging to every religions and the Kannada anthem "Jaya Bharatha Jananiya Tanujate" also sung.

Meanwhile, Keralites are also celebrating the formation day (Kerala Piravi) of the state. It was formed in the same year as Karnataka.
