At least 11 children are feared dead in a head-on collision between their school bus and a truck on Monday morning near Jalandhar, Punjab.

There were reportedly 35 children in the bus of Akal academy which was on its way to the school. The accident took place on a highway near Jalandhar. 

Reports state that the driver of the school bus also died in the accident. Several injured children have been shifted to a local hospital for treatment.

"Seven students died on the spot, four died in hospital. The driver of the bus also died... The accident happened around 8 am," Rajinder Singh, Superintendent of Police (Rural), was quoted as saying by NDTV. 

The cause of the accident is not known. According to some reports, the truck driver was driving on the wrong side of the road, leading to the collision.
