The hit Netflix original show was released in March which is adapted from the New York Times bestseller Thirteen Reasons Why, written by Jay Asher. The series features Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Kate Walsh, Brain D'Arcy, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro, and Tommy Dorfman.

The teen drama drew lots of flak for using a graphic depiction of the lead protagonist's suicide. The National Association of School Psychologists has issued a warning against viewing the series to parents of "vulnerable youth." In Canada, many schools have banned any kind of discussion about the show and also issued warnings as well.

Meanwhile, amid all the controversy, Selena Gomez took stand for the show as she told the Associated Press: "We stayed very true to the book and that's initially what [author] Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story and I think that's what we wanted to do.

"We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] gonna come no matter what. It's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with how it's doing."

Gomez also opened up about it to E! Online, saying: "I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was. I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused—in a way that they would talk about it because it's something that's happening all the time. So, I'm overwhelmed that's it's doing as well as it's doing."

13 Reasons Why will reportedly get a renewal for second season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "a writers room for the sophomore run has been up and running for a few weeks" although Netflix did not confirm anything yet.
