Srinagar, Nov 22 (ANI): The Ministry of Tourism in India s Kashmir organised a folk music festival Shahsrang to revive the Sufi legacy of the Valley. The festival kicked off in the summer capital, Srinagar on the banks of famed Dal Lake, at Sher-i-KashmirInternational Conference Centre (SKICC). Shahsrang celebrates various genres of Kashmiri Sufiyana, folk music and Kashmiri light music. The festival includes grand cultural show presented by renowned Kashmiri artists. Shahsrang focuses on the traditional use of mystic poetry, the songs of yearning and remembrance of history that have fashioned Kashmir s folk music into an essential repository of memory and faith. A number of music lovers were seen enjoying the mystic musical performances by various Kashmiri artistes. The defining feature of the society of Jammu and Kashmir is Sufism. It was in a 1400 AD that wandering, itinerant Sufis arrived in Kashmir. Sufism became the way of life for a majority of the peoples of the valley.
