The third season of the Indian Super League will be kicked off at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, the Times of India has reported. Although the fixtures have not been confirmed by the ISL organisers, it has been reported that ISL 2016 is scheduled for a start on October 1.

Meanwhile, sources close to the development have also told the Indian publication that NorthEast United FC have been asked to prepare for the opening match. The John Abraham co-owned side will take on defending champions Chennaiyin FC in the opening day of ISL 2016.

"The organisers plan to have either the opening match or the final at an emerging venue and Guwahati appears to be the perfect choice," TOI quoted a source as saying. "The franchise has received massive backing in Guwahati and the venue deserves to host a big match. You can expect an announcement soon."

The IG stadium in Guwahati has remained choc-a-bloc during the Indian Super League matches over the two seasons and fans have visited the stadium in huge numbers. The fan base of NorthEast United FC is also one of the biggest among the eight ISL sides.

The Guwahati franchisee, who have never reached the last four of ISL over the two seasons, are desperate to get a good performance for themselves this time around. NorthEast United FC have roped in new faces, including the likes of Katsumi Yusa, Mailson Alves and Subrata Paul ahead of the third season of the Indian football competition.

The side have also signed Sergio Farias as their head coach for the third season.

NorthEast United FC had defeated Chennaiyin FC last year at home with a 2-0 margin on October 20, 2015.
