The European Parliament (EP) has warned the European Union (EU) members of a possible chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack by the Islamic State (Isis) terrorists.

The European Parliament, which is the directly elected parliamentary institution of EU and represents the second largest democratically elected set of legislatorsin the world (after the Parliament of India), has asked EU to "prepare" for the possibility of a CBRN attack by Isis (also known as Daesh).

The EP, which is composed of 751 members, has said that European cities are on the radar of Isis, where the terrorist group has "an unknown number of sympathisers" who "could carry out a CBRN attack on European soil."

"Several experts have warned that there is a genuine risk of [Isis/Daesh] using chemical, biological, radiological or even nuclear materials in the context of future attacks on
European targets."

"It has been suggested that the group's next weapon of choice could, for example, be an improvised explosive device containing chemical or radioactive materials," a research paper published by the Parliament said.

While revealing that the EU institutions have in the past prevented several CBRN attacks on European soil and was prepared for "worst-case scenarios," the EP research paper said: "...however, some gaps remain, in particular with regard to information- sharing among member states."
