Thousands of fans of the annual beauty pageant were left shocked and confused, after a letter started circulating on social media, claiming that Miss Universe will not be held this year.

The letter, which carries the insignia of Miss Universe Organization (MUO), states that Paula Shugart, President of MUO, and Luigi Boria, Mayor of city of Doral, have announced that the 2014 pageant will be held only on 18 January 2015.

The whole letter has now been found to be a complete hoax.

Mayor Boria did announce recently that the Doral City Council is giving its stamp of approval to host the beauty contest, specifically noting that the approval is for 2015 Miss Universe pageant.

An AP report (via KomoNews) on 13 September noted that Doral City Council has given its approval to host the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant. The council has authorised a $2.5 million stipend to host the event at the Trump National Doral Miami hotel, the report noted.

However, this caused much confusion over the Miss Universe 2014 event date and venue, after a CBS Miami report recently stated that the Miss Universe 2015 will held on 18 January at the Trump National located at 4400 NW 87th Ave.

This has given rise to speculations that there could be two Miss Universe pageants next year – one in January and another in December, reported Manila Bulletin.

While speculations are on the rise, a Missosology report noted that Miss Universe organisers cannot afford to lose a year as that will affect its reputation among the sponsors. It said that the confusion over the time and venue of Miss Universe could be a publicity stunt by the organisers.

Miss Universe 2013 pageant was held in Russia in November 2013, so there is ample time in the hands of the organisers for this year's pageant.
