Marvel has hit the first bull's eye of the year. With two crucial releases (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Thor: Ragnarok) lined up for 2017, the studio has won its first box office outing with a remarkable collection. The comic-studio released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 on May 5 in numerous parts of the world and the sequel has won box offices since the release.

Guardians 2 starring Chris Pratt has made over $100 million in its opening weekend at the domestic market alone. The film released in 4, 347 screen on Friday (May 5) in the US and it has already earned an estimate of $140 million as of Saturday (May 6) collections are recorded, Variety reported.

While GotG Vol 2 broke the collections mark set by Guardians of the Galaxy's opening weekend (that stood at $94 million), the Disney-Marvel tentpole failed to become the biggest opener of this year: Beauty and the Beast, which earned a whopping $174.8 million through its opening weekend.

The Guardians has been ranked fifth as far as the biggest opener for a Marvel movie is concerned. It stands behind The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3.

Opening almost a week earlier than the US release, the film had already made $106 million through its opening weekend in about 37 markets. And as per industry reports, the worldwide box office collections have reached $167 million as of Thursday, May 4. The domestic and international collections have added up to the movie crossing the $200 million mark.

With the wrap of the Sunday's (May 7) collections, the final opening weekend collections will be clear.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was expected to be a blockbuster as the first movie created a great buzz for the sequel. The film had received great reviews from critics. A fun adventurous journey, the film was made with a budget of $200 million.

The film travels through the journey of "Peter Quill and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter's parentage is revealed."

The film builds up to Avengers: Infinity War, releasing on May 4, 2018.
