The 56th annual Grammy Awards kicked off from the Staples Center in Los Angeles with a stunning show by power couple Jay Z and Beyonce, who performed "Drunk in Love."

But the night belonged to hip-hop duo Macklemore and Lewis, and electronic duo Daft Punk who took home a major share of the awards. Macklemore and Lewis, whose album "The Heist" was nominated in seven categories, released the album on their own without help from other record labels.

"I want to say we made this album without a record label, we made it independently and we appreciate all the support," Macklemore told the audience after collecting an award.

The helmeted Daft Punk duo, whose "Random Access Memories" was honoured with the Album of the Year, appeared on stage with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers to receive their honors.

"I supposed the robots would like to thank … you know, honestly, I bet France is really proud of these guys right now," Williams said on behalf of the duo.
