After missing two launch dates, Google's commercial variant of the Project Tango augmented reality (AR)-phone -- Lenovo Phab 2 Pro -- was released in the US on Tuesday.

The Phab 2 Pro was originally unveiled in June at the Lenovo Tech World 2016 event in San Francisco and was supposed to go on sale in August, but it was postponed to late September.

Now, the device is up for grabs at Lenovo e-store for $499.99 (approx. €452/Rs. 33,403) in the US. The Phab 2 Pro users will be able download 35 AR applications free of cost on Google Play store.

One of the coolest features of this AR-phone is the immersive e-shopping experience. For instance, Wayfair's in-house AR app allows shoppers to visualise furniture and décor in their homes at scale before making a purchase, tackling one of the largest barriers to online shopping -- the inability to get a good sense for a product's aesthetic, and how large or small the item is.

With AR technology, WayfairView app users can select furniture from an extensive 3-D catalogue, and virtually preview items in any of their room through the lens of a Lenovo Phab 2 Pro smartphone.

Users will also be able to move and rotate products for an accurate rendering of an item's size and aesthetics.

Besides these features, Phab 2 Pro's 3D sensing abilities has several uses in architectural (and home interior) designing, mapping and navigation in underground tunnels and also auto guidance system for visually impaired people, to help navigate in uncharted places. These features are expected to be included in future updates.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro boasts a massive 6.4-inch QHD display with 2.5D curved glass shield on the front and aluminum-based metal shell with fingerprint sensor on the back.

Under the hood, it comes packed with Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB inbuilt storage, 16MP main-camera, 8MP front snapper and a 4,050mAh battery with fast charging technology.
