US Masters 2016: Jordan Spieth takes charge with brilliant first round as McIlroy and Day play catchup
Jason Day will begin his sixth Masters as the heavy favourite, in the company of American Matt Kuchar and South African Ernie Els. He is the world number one, and winner of six of his last 13 tournaments, including back-to-to back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Match Play. Day, the hottest player in the game after winning six times in his last 13 starts, and company are scheduled to tee off at 1.06pm on 7 April.

Jason Day emulated his boyhood idol Tiger Woods when he clinched a one-stroke victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida on 20 March. He was not at the top of his game, but did enough to clinch his fifth victory in his past 12 starts on the PGA Tour.

Charl Schwartzel secured his first victory in the United States since the 2011 Masters by beating Bill Haas in a playoff at the Valspar Championship in Florida on 13 March. South African Schwartzel came from five shots behind in the final round to card a four-under-par 67 before beating Haas with a tap-in par at the first extra hole.

Adam Scott went back-to-back, winning for the second successful week by overcoming some closing-hole drama to claim the WGC-Cadillac Championship in breezy Miami on 6 March. Scott, who won the Honda Classic on 28 February began the final round three shots behind leader Rory McIlroy and fell six strokes off the pace making two double bogeys in the first five holes. However he turned his game around with a run of six birdies in the next nine holes.

Jordan Spieth has already won seven times on the PGA Tour, including two major titles, but he says a victory at Riviera Country Club this week would have special significance. Not only is the iconic par-71 layout, host venue for the PGA Tours Northern Trust Open, one of his favourite courses but its allure very nearly tempted him to study at nearby University of Southern California instead of in his native Texas.
