Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won a dramatic United States grand prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on Sunday, which also helped him win his third F1 title.

Hamilton should consider himself lucky as it was a mistake from his team mate Nico Rosberg in the latter stage of the race, which handed the Brit driver a chance to take lead. With just seven laps to go in Austin, Rosberg slid off the track and allowed Hamilton that yard of space to overtake the German.

With drivers such as Hamilton, they just need an inch as they can make a yard out of it.

Rosberg was disappointed to have lost the race in such a manner as he believes his mistake cost him a victory in the US grand prix.

"I just got wheelspin," Formula One official website quoted Rosberg as saying.

"It's never happened to me before, not even in testing. I can't explain it. It's unbelievable. To nearly spin by myself coming off a corner- I don't understand it."

"Obviously that was really, really tough at the time to lose the lead and the win like that. I was feeling really good - it just went wrong. My mistake cost me the win."

Hamilton, who won back-to-back F1 title, thought that he had lost the race as Rosberg was driving beautifully in Austin.

"Today so many times I thought I had lost the race," Hamilton said.

"Nico was really quick in stages, he pitted under the Virtual Safety Car...but never for one second did I think I couldn't do it."

"I'm buzzing inside... I can't find the right words to express the feeling but it's the greatest I've had in my life. Nico drove a fantastic race, mad respect for him as a team mate. I just can't believe I'm sitting here. To my family, I love you. To the team, thank you so much - I'm overdue a drink with the team!"

The US grand prix victory was Brit's 10th win of the season, which just explains the quality performance that has been put up by the driver in the cockpit. Hamilton, with this victory in Austin, has accumulated 327 points so far and is even looking good for some more points in the next three races to come.

Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel, who finished second and third respectively in the US grand prix, are battling it out for second place in the drivers' championship. Only four points separates the two drivers as Vettel has 251 points, compared to Rosberg's 247.
