The five-month-old baby girl, who was bitten and brutalised by her father last month, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday at a hospital in Bikaner, according to reports.

The 36-year-old father, Bahadur Singh, had chewed off the girl's upper lips, cheeks and nose because she was crying.

The infant, Radha, was admitted to Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh government hospital where she underwent a plastic surgery on Feb 1.

The condition of the baby deteriorated on Tuesday night and since then she was kept on ventilator.

"The condition of the baby deteriorated on Tuesday night after she was breastfed by her mother. The milk entered into her lungs following which some complications developed and she was put on ventilator support but she died," a spokesperson of the government hospital told PTI.

Police said that Singh is in custody and will be charged with murder.

The incident happened in Kolayat town, 51 kilometres from Bikaner city, on Jan 24. Singh, a farm labourer, came home in a drunken state when his wife, Santosh Devi, was applying Mehendi (henna) on her hands.

Singh asked Santosh to do some work, but she denied as her hands were covered with mehendi. This irked him and he began beating her. He also beat his older daughter who after seeing her mother being assaulted started crying.

Apparently, he bit the girl on her back and hands. Hearing the screams of her sister, Radha woke up and started crying. Radha's crying angered him further and he bit off parts of her face.

With the help of social workers, Santosh filed an FIR against her husband the next morning.

"It is really very sad. She developed respiratory complications last night. She was put on ventilator and we were hoping that she would come out and fight like she was fighting for the last 10 days but unfortunately she succumbed to the complications," Deepak Kalra, Chairperson, Child Rights Commission, told PTI.

"As you know the surgery was five-and-half hours long. There were three surgeries that were done at one go and then she had to undergo two more surgeries. The case was complicated and unfortunately she could not go through it," she said.
