Netherlands progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup following a controversial victory over Mexico at the Estadio Castelão, Fortaleza.

Giovani Dos Santos' early second half strike was cancelled out by Wesley Sneijder in the dying minutes of the match, before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar grabbed the winner by converting a controversial penalty.

The match started with the Oranje facing some injury problems as their defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong was forced off the pitch within the first ten minutes of the game.

Taking advantage of Holland's momentary lapse in concentration, Mexico created three successive chances in the space of ten minutes.

While Dos Santos couldn't make contact with Miguel Layún excellent cross in the 13th minute, they came a little better six minutes later when Héctor Herrera's effort was only a couple of inches wide of the post.

Herrera got another chance in the 21st minute, when he managed to get to the ball before Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. However, a late ditch defending from Ron Vlaar saw him clear the ball over the cross bar.

Giovani dos Santos got a very good chance to put Mexico ahead in the ending stages of the first half, but his effort from a pretty tight angle was saved by Cillessen.

Three minutes after the break, Mexico finally broke the deadlock through Dos Santos, who found the nets with a stunning half-volley from outside the box.

Netherlands came close to getting the equaliser at the hour mark when De Vrij fired a volley from inside the box. However, an alert Guillermo Ochoa did well to deny him the leveller.

A couple of minutes later, Wesley Sneijder, after getting the ball from Arjen Robben, also came close to equalising after his effort struck the crossbar and went over.

Finally when it looked like the Oranje were heading out of the 2014 World Cup, Sneijder grabbed the leveller, with a couple of minutes remaining on the clock. Huntelaar nodded a corner towards Sneijder, who made no mistakes as he slotted a low volley past Ochoa.

Finally things went from bad to worse for Mexico after they conceded a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time. Rafael Márquez brought down Robben in the box and the referee straight away awarded a penalty to Netherlands. Huntelaar stepped up and eased the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, sending Netherlands through to the last eight.
