A man in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district was arrested by the police for beheading two of his sons and attempting to kill his wife and third son. He suspected his wife of having an incestuous affair with his brother-in-law.

The police arrested accused Kalicharan Kushwaha, a marginal farmer, from Basata village.

Assistant Sub Inspector Gyan Singh of the district's Bamitha Police Station told the Hindustan Times that Kushwaha entered the bedroom with an axe and attacked his wife and children while they were sleeping around 10 pm on Thursday.

"He (Kalicharan) suspected that his wife had an illicit relationship with his brother-in-law, and wanted to kill his wife and children," Singh said.

According to police officials, two of his sons — four-year-old Bhole and eight-year-old Lokendra — died on the spot while the wife and the eldest son — 10-year-old Karan — suffered serious injuries on the neck and the shoulder.

Neighbours and other family members rushed to help the victims after hearing their cries. The wife managed to open the door following which people overpowered Kushwaha and then handed him over to the police.

The wife and son were rushed to a nearby hospital in the district.

The accused suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship with his brother-in-law and assumed that all the three children were the result of the incestuous affair.
