Lucknow, Nov 15 (ANI): Farmers in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday burnt sugarcanes as they protested against the state government for keeping sugarcane state advised price (SAP) unchanged for third year in a row. The price decided by the government for the 2014-15 crushing season for the common variety of cane is at rupees 280 a quintal, for the early variety, rupees 290 a quintal and for rejected variety, rupees 275. The farmers said the government has further slashed the prices of sugarcanes, whereas they have been demanding price to be hiked to rupees 320-350 while the millers demanded the rollback of SAP to rupees 225 ($ 3.63) a quintal. Last year in December also farmers had staged protest on the same issue by blocking key routes, including the national highway and also brought several buses and a train to halt.
