The sacred month of fasting — Ramadan — has come to an end with Muslim devotees all around the world looking forward to celebrate Eid Ul-Fitr on July 6 or July 7. Many filmmakers consider the festive season the best time to release their movies, and some of the most anticipated films of the year are scheduled to hit the theatres this week.
Three major Mollywood films — "Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum," "Karinkunnam Sixes (6's)" and "Kasaba" — will be released during the festive season this year. Here is a brief introduction to the movies that will lock horns at the Kerala box office.
The comedy romantic entertainer "Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum" stars Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya and Amala Paul in the lead roles. The Boban Samuel-directed film has already raised the expectation of the audience, after the release of its trailer and video songs. The multi-starrer, bankrolled by Ashiq Usman Productions, is set to hit the screens as a Eid release on July 6 at the Kerala box office.
The upcoming sports drama "Karinkunnam Sixes" narrates the incidents that happen in the life of a few inmates at the Poojapura central jail. The convicts are trained to play volleyball by coach Vandana, played by Manju Warrier. The Deepu Karunakaran-directed film is being produced by Jayalal Menon and Anil Biswas under the production banner Backwater Studios. It also has Anoop Menon, Babu Antony, Gregory Jacob, Baiju, Padmaraj Ratheesh, Santhosh Keezhattoor, Suraj Venjarumoodu and Lena in significant roles and is scheduled to clash with "Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum" at the box office in Kerala on July 6.
Mammootty's "Kasaba" has been making headlines even before it went on floors in February this year. The film has become the most-hyped film of the megastar following the release of its first-look poster that went viral after being heavily trolled on social media. The 28-second teaser of the debut directorial venture of Nithin Renji Panicker has also gone viral, becoming the fastest Malayalam movie teaser to cross 1 million mark within 99 hours of its release. The Mammootty-starrer, which also has Neha Saxena and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in the female lead roles, will be released throughout India on July 7.
"Anuraga Karikkin Vellam"
Asif Ali and Biju Menon's family entertainer "Anuraga Karikkin Vellam" will also be released on July 7, pitted against the Mammootty-starrer "Kasaba." The Khalid Rahman-directed movie has Asha Sarath, Sreenath Bhasi, Rejisha Vijayan and Soubin Shahir in significant roles. The film is being bankrolled by actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Arya, businessman Shaji Nadesan and cinematographer-director Santhosh Sivan under the banner of August Cinema.
