It's easy to grab a copy of your favourite game from the retailer and start playing it. However, taking care of the game media and keeping it in the mint condition isn't that easy since game discs usually tend to fade away and eventually stop working.

However, fret not dedicated gamers. There are ways to still retain the value and usability of your gaming discs, even after months and months of usage, for almost all the major gaming platforms – PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4. Here are a few steps to help you out.

How to Clean Any Videogame Disc – Steps

Step 1: Gather your game disc, a cleaning cloth (the ones that your get at any optician, commonly known as microfiber) and a disc cleaning spray.

Step 2: Start by wiping the disc from the centre to the outer edge with the cleaning cloth, putting in as many as swipes as required.

Step 3: If there's something that's stuck on the body of the disc and is hard to get off, spray some cleaning spray on it and then try wiping again.

WARNING: Don't use regular cloth (like a piece of shirt) to clean as you may scratch the disc. Also use a proper disc cleaning spray instead of water.

How to Clean Xbox Game Discs – Steps

Step 1: Cleaning a game disc, especially one that belongs to the Xbox, requires a bit more time and patience. To start cleaning, mix a solution of isopropyl alcohol (you will get it in most grocery stores) and water. In case you don't find isopropyl alcohol, note that window cleaner also works. Also, a microfiber cloth.

Step 2: When handling, don't touch the surface of the disc. Rather, hold the disc by its hole or outer edges and start the cleaning process.

Step 3: Dip the microfiber cloth into the mixture and wipe the disc from centre to the edges. To do this, rotate the disc and keep wiping it from the centre to the edge. Note: never use materials like tissue, paper or towel as such materials tend to scratch the disc.

Step 4: Once the wipe and clean part is done, place the disc bottom-up and leave it on the table for a few minutes to dry. You should not dry with any other cloth since it can scratch the disc.

How to Clean, Fix Scratched Discs – Steps

Step 1: Get a non-bleaching toothpaste. Using toothpaste helps you to polish off light scratches on the disc. For better results, use Baking soda toothpaste, but avoid gel-based toothpastes.

Step 2: Put a small drop of it on the disc surface and a small amount of water – just a drop or two will do the trick. Now use your fingers (or a microfiber cloth) to rub out the scratches. Rub from the centre to the edge.

Step 3: When finished, rinse the disc with warm water to remove any excess toothpaste from the surface of the disc.
