At least one person was killed and 15 others were injured in a clash between police and an agitated mob that took place in a residential area of Delhi on Sunday evening.

The violence occurred in Mayur Vihar area when police beat up two men who reportedly violated traffic rules when they tried to speed away on their bike. One of the motorists fell off the bike and was hit by a passing vehicle. Police claimed that the two motorists were drunk but denied assaulting them.

The injured men were taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital. One of them said to be in critical condition was identified as Kamruddin, First Post reported.

Enraged over the police brutality, the crowd that gathered at the spot went on a rampage and set fire to a police post located near two schools. The mob also vandalized a barricade,a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus and several other vehicles.  

In a bid to contain the violence, police resorted to using teargas and firing in the air. Around 22 people have been detained in connection to the incident.

 "The injured are in Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital, my Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) who is giving me information on the phone has informed that one boy has been hit on the shoulder and there is a dead body too. Five police constables have been injured, in the Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) hospital, there is one person with bullet injuries and the other scooterist, because of whom the whole incident has been triggered, happens to have been beaten with lathis," BM Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of the east district, told NDTV.

To avoid further tension in the area, around 1600 police personnel from 20 companies have been deployed in Mayur Vihar, across the Yamuna. The situation is presently under control, police said.
