This is the moment a 12-year-old girl threw herself out of a moving car and into a road in north London as a carjacker sped off with her baby brother still inside.

A man, said to be in his late teens, stole the Vauxhall Astra after the two childrens mother left to go to a shop in Kempe Road, Enfield.

CCTV footage of the incident, which happened at about 12.45pm on Saturday (2 July), shows the girl make her escape by throwing herself out of the car, bouncing along the road.

The baby, still strapped into his car seat, remained inside the vehicle as the suspect drove off at high speed.

The panic-stricken mother frantically called the police on seeing her car drive off and her daughter lying in the road.

Detective Inspector Chris Rixon praised the bravery of the girl, who was treated for minor injuries, and said it was lucky she wasnt hit by an oncoming car.

He said: The fact that she threw herself out of moving vehicle just shows how frightened she was.

The infant was found about 35 minutes later unharmed after being left a few miles away on a doorstep in Cheshunt. The vehicle was also found later that day abandoned a short distance from that address in Coopers Walk.

Detectives have issued another appeal for anyone with information or witnesses to come forward. They also urged the suspect to hand himself in before it is too late.

He is described as a white male, in his late teens, with light hair in a spiky style and possibly wearing a hooded top.

Det Insp Rixon said:The suspect is an opportunist who showed little regard for the welfare and the safety of the children. What happened is every parents worse nightmare and Im specifically appealing for the suspect to give himself up now before it is too late.

Im certain that friends and family of the suspect know what he has done. He put the lives of two young children in jeopardy and I would hope that seeing and hearing what he put them through will make them think twice about harbouring such a callous and dangerous criminal. Its not too late to do the right thing and come forward and speak to the police.

All the victims involved have been put through an awful ordeal, none more so than the little 12-year-old girl. The fact that she threw herself out of moving vehicle just shows how frightened she was. She is a very fortunate little girl as the situation could have been so much worse, it could have resulted in her sustaining significant injuries or could have resulted in her dying had she been hit by an oncoming car.

I would like to take this opportunity to praise the bravery of the girl involved as well as thanking the member of the public who found the little boy on their doorstep. They took such great care of him and both the police and the childs mother are very grateful.
