Singer Rihanna arrives for the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (CFDA) at Lincoln Center in New YorkReuters

Rihanna, recipient of the 2014's Fashion Icon Award, managed to make quite an impression when she turned up at the Council of Fashion Designers of America, or CFDA, Awards on Monday attired in a see-through gown embellished with more than 230,000 Swarovski crystals.

The dress by Adam Selman left very little to the imagination, and a number of people are of the opinion that Rihanna might have pushed the envelope a bit too far with the mesh dress.

But Selman, the designer, is standing by his creation, and even told Style.com that he wanted Rihanna's look a bit scandalous.

"We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous," Selman said. "The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that."

"She's daring, she's bold, and she's not afraid of fashion. She doesn't let fashion overcome her. She embraces it and makes everything she puts on her own. Not many people do that," he added.

At the same time, a section of her Twitter fans, too, came forward to support their star, noting that fashion is all about taking risks and that Rihanna has always been willing to experiment with her style.

In May, Rihanna appeared at the MET Gala after party, in a backless slinky golden-hued gown where she took skin showing to a whole new level.

Stepping out without a bra or an underwear, the songstress flaunted her side boobs as well as her butt crack, and Rihanna seemed unconcerned at the possibility of a wardrobe malfunction.

On various occasions, the Bajan beauty has posed nearly-naked and some of these pictures were even uploaded on her social networking sites. But in April, Rihanna faced an Instagram ban after she posted a topless picture of herself on the photo-sharing site.
