State-run telecommunication service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has taken the phone business in India to new heights with the launch of a new handset with e-governance applications for just ₹1099.

The phone dubbed "Bharat phone" was launched by the Visiting Mauritius President Rajkeshwar Purryag in the presence of Governor H R Bhardwaj and state Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande. The handset which is developed with the support of Pantel Technologies sports 3 inch screen and supports 64 MB RAM along with 64 MB internal storage. It is a dual SIM handset with 1.3 megapixel pixel camera and 1,800 mAh LAN battery, which can provide upto 15 days under standby mode and eight hours of talktime.

"The low-cost mobile device will alter the Indian feature phone industry as it has been designed especially for e-governance applications and optimised for Internet access to empower common man," Economic Times quoted BSNL chairman R K Upadhyay.

The phones will also allow users to access e-mail and Facebook. Other features of the BSNL new handset include, download facility and Java games. The phone will be available in the market starting from next week.

"As the phone is pre-bundled with attractive voice plan, the mobile handset offers common man the power of Internet access at an affordable price and will benefit a wide section of society," Upadhyay added.

Recently, BSNL launched a budget phablet in the country in association with Champion Computers Pvt. Ltd. Dubbed BSNL Champion DM6513, the smartphone sports a 6.5-inch capacitive screen and comes with Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS, dual-core processor and 512 MB RAM with inbuilt storage capable of expanding up to 32 GB. The budget phablet comes equipped with 5.0-megapixel main camera, a 2.0-megapixel snapper on the front and a high-capacity 3,500 mAh battery which promises up to 4 hours of talk time and 62 hours under standby mode. It has been priced at ₹6,999.
