Tamil film "Biriyani" has reportedly taken an average start at the Tamil Nadu box office.

"Biriyani" has earned around ₹2.9 crore nett (after 30 percent tax) in two days in Tamil Nadu, according to Andhraboxoffice website.

The black comedy thriller film was released along with Jiiva's "Endrendrum Punnagai" and Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3" on 20 December. Although "Biriyani" received good reviews from critics, it seems the release of "Endrendrum Punnagai" and "Dhoom 3" has affected the film's collections.

The Karthi starrer took an average start in Tamil Nadu, whereas the film's performances have been below average in other states. According to Andhraboxoffice, "Biriyani" film business has been worse in Nizam/AP areas. The film has also been affected in Kerala and Karnataka states due to "Dhoom 3" wave. The Aamir Khan starrer has taken off to a fantastic start at the worldwide box office. "Dhoom 3" has been shattering records set by "Chennai Express" and "Krrish 3."

The film has been performing extraordinary business in Tamil Nadu-Kerala area as well. According to entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, "Dhoom 3" has netted ₹1.63 crore in its opening day at the TN-Kerala area. It is the highest ever opening day nett for any Hindi film in the area. Clearly, the film's performance seems to have affected the Tamil releases.

It remains to be seen as to how "Biriyani" fares in its opening weekend (20-22 December). The film has about four more days to fetch in decent collections as Vijay Sethupathi's "Rummy" is likely to get released on 27 December. Vijay is riding high with back-to-back successful films this year and his upcoming film "Rummy" is expected to take a good opening upon its release.

"Biriyani", which is already facing strong competition from new releases, will have one more competitor in "Rummy" from Friday. One needs to wait a little longer to find out whether the Karthi starrer will be able to sustain its momentum or witness drop in its collections.

Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film is about how a plate of "Biriyani" changes the lives of Karthi and Premgi Amaren, who appears as his childhood friend. Besides Karthi and Premgi, "Biriyani" has Hansika, Mandy Takhar, Nassar, Subbu Panchu and Ramki in pivotal roles.
