German luxury car maker BMW on Thursday showed off a revamped version of the X1 SUV in India with a price staring from ₹27.9 lakh onwards.
Initially unveiled in 2010, the X1 is one of the most popular SUVs in the entry-level segment and over 5,400 units were sold in India till now. With the launch of the improved variant, BMP hopes to boost its sales in the sub-continent.
"This year we are looking at a certain growth in India. This will be on the back of new models such as the new X1 and 1 series, which will be launched towards the end of the year," said Philipp von Sahr, President of BMW Group India, at the launch of the new variant.
The all new X1 sports several changes in its exterior and interior specifications. The company has introduced three variants of X1 in the country. On the mechanical front, the SUV comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine which is expected to generate 18hp of power, 380 Nm torque and reach 0-100 kmph acceleration in 7.9 seconds. Improvements were also seen in its headlight, tail lamp, bumper and steering wheel. The new BMW car will be assembled at the company's Chennai plant.
"We believe in profitable and sustainable growth. If you look at competition with respect to sales numbers every month you lose focus. We don't want volumes at the cost of profitability," said Sahr.
The SUV will be pitted against Audi Q3, imminent Volvo V40 Cross Country and Mercedes-Benz B Class. BMW is also seeking to expand its dealer network across India in a bid to consoldiate more market share for its SUV. Last year, the company sold a total of 9,375 units X1 units in the country.
"We will be adding new dealerships and this will give us new market," Sahr said.
The low-end sDrive 20d variant is priced at ₹27.9 lakh, while the top two models - Drive 20d Sport Line and sDrive 20d xLine - come for ₹32.5 lakh.
